Samples from the album
Feeding Of The 5000 was considered absolutely revolutionary in its time due to its extreme sound, frequent profanity and anarchist ideology.
The album helped re-ignite the campaign for nuclear disarmament, and this anti-war theme is particularly evident in They've Got A Bomb, which features a period of silence halfway through. Crass claimed that this was to stop dancing during a live performance so that the audience could contemplate the potential of nuclear war.
The album was named Feeding Of The 5000 due to the fact that it was the minimum number of vinyls the band could have pressed, and according to drummer Penny Rimbaud "it was 4900 more than we thought we would sell".
