Synth-pop has never sounded this innocent - or this prophetic. Speak And Spell is the debut from a band that would go on to reshape electronic music for decades, and even here, at the very beginning, Depeche Mode seem to know something nobody else has figured out yet.
Recorded in 1981 in London with producer Daniel Miller (founder of Mute Records), the album delivers eleven tracks of bubbling euphoria, deceptively simple melodies, and lyrics about love, mechanical discipline, and play. It sounds innocent on the surface - and unsettling beneath.
Among today’s vinyl, this is one of those albums you pick up once and put down an hour and a half later.
