It was the moment Foals stopped being ‘that math-rock band’ and became something much bigger. What Went Down from 2015 is the Oxford quintet’s fourth album — and the first where their volume, fury, and megalomaniac hunger for catharsis make complete sense.
The title track opens like a wall of sound, Yannis Philippakis snarling over layers of guitar that have grown into a genuine monster. The rest of the album balances that extreme with quieter, more melodic moments. Produced by Flood — who once shaped the sound of Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode — and it shows.
