Nas - Illmatic

Illmatic runs just thirty-nine minutes, but that’s enough. In 1994, Nas mapped the Queensbridge housing projects with a precision that hip-hop had rarely seen before – not as nostalgia, but as a living reality that suffocates you even in the moment you want to leave it.

Nas was eighteen when he recorded Illmatic, but musically he was a decade ahead. Production came from DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip and Ill Will – each brought a different sound, yet the result is seamlessly whole. Illmatic is considered one of the peaks of East Coast hip-hop and one of the most precisely written debut albums in the genre’s history.

Released on clear vinyl as part of Sony’s Clear Classics series – a limited reissue that brings a classic back to the format it deserves.
