Juan Mendez took his Silent Servant project to the next level when he released Negative Fascination on Hospital Productions in 2012. His EBM-inspired, brooding bent towards techno had already made its mark on Sandwell District and other similarly influential labels, but his debut album gave him the space to really shape his luscious sonic dystopia. Even after more than ten years, it is a masterpiece in the space it occupies, which is imbued with harsh urban malaise, but at the same time it can also use subtlety in addition to intensity.
