About the release and samples
Pygmalion arrived in 1995 and abandoned everything Slowdive’s audience had come to expect. The band turned its back on shoegaze and released an album so quiet, so distant, so immersed in texture that Creation Records didn’t know what to do with it. Today it is considered one of the most important ambient-electronic albums of the 1990s.
Slowdive recorded Pygmalion as a band in the process of dissolution – a dissolution that followed the album’s release and lasted two decades. The album is built on minimal loops, samples, and the whispered vocals of Rachel Goswell. Guitars vanish or are processed beyond recognition – what remains is air, space, and time.
Released in 2025 on vinyl as the first official Sony Music reissue – available on the format that Pygmalion has always deserved, thirty years on.
