The xx made silence do the heavy lifting. Their debut album from 2009 builds entire worlds out of what's left out - Romy's voice bare over Oliver's guitar, sparse drum machine ticks, bass notes hanging in the air. “Intro” starts without a word. It doesn't need any.
Written in the basement of a school in Stratford, London. Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft had been writing their intimate, minimalist post-punk since childhood, and Jamie xx refined the production into something that sounds like a private conversation in the dark. The album won the Mercury Prize and instantly defined an aesthetic that still resonates throughout alternative music today.
An album that says more with a single note than most do with a full orchestra.
